Ed's note: Part One of this series can be accessed in the June 2008 issue. Spirit Matters is providing a real time, real life demonstration of artist Carol Bertrand's spiritual journey through a life-altering crisis as illustrated in her abstract series, "Red Paintings." I got out an old painting that I was not satisfied with and began painting over it. The same hot reds and yellows appeared, only this time, there was a little more order in the shapes. The structure began to appear as rooms, doors, pivotal points, and shadowy figures hiding behind lines, and emerging from doorways.

As my energy was spent, I placed the painting on the wall. As I looked at the painting, I saw a large white “7” that outlined a doorway. There was a mysterious womanly figure emerging from what could be described as a hidden past. The fact that I had turned 72 in March leapt into my mind. Of course, I am in the seventh stage of my life, having been through seven decades of life, each with its own set of challenges. Part of my pain was the expectations I had that everything in life should be painless and pleasant at this late stage. However, the Universe has its own rhythm and it’s not through teaching me yet.

I called the painting The Seventh State.
