Art Frees the Soul

Ed's note: Beginning in this issue, Spirit Matters will provide a real time, real life demonstration of artist Carol Bertrand's spiritual journey through a life-altering crisis as illustrated in her abstract series, "Red Paintings." See more of Bertrand's work at Bertrandart.info

My art is about the essence of who I am. I try to reach beyond and under emotions and the intellectual aspects, and express in a visual way the presence within my heart and soul of something beyond pictures and beyond the senses. While I am painting I do not plan where or how my brushes and paints evolve on the canvas, but I try to listen to the movements of my heart from this interior place.

After that, the color, lines, and compositional aspects of the painting are considered. I then refine the work with artistic references. My work is abstract because understanding the inner workings of the soul can only be expressed abstractly and that is my primary interest. My compositions also have design integrity because I work at being an accomplished and intelligent artist.I consider the elements of line, shape, movement, rhythm, color, and space.

I hope the viewer will find some intrigue in relating to my personal expressions of soul.

Inexplicable

33 x 48 Acrylic

At the beginning of this series, I painted “Inexplicable”. It is a large expressionof angst, fast movement, expressive line and mark, in and out spaces and hot color. What was I thinking as I painted? I was not thinking at all. I was expressing a mixture of confusion and anger. I began seeing an analyst. I started having intense dreams. I returned to my journal and wrote as fast as words could come with no particular clarity. The painting was done the same way only without words. I found that this was very healing for me. My birthday was approaching and I remember saying, “This should not be happening to me at this stage in my life.
